With summer now upon us and the soggy days of May being replaced by warm sunshine, hopes will be high that this could be a barbecue summer.

Provided the remaining restrictions can be lifted - either this month or not too long after - there could be some great outdoor gatherings. Friends and family will be able to get together again for the first time in a long while, and sunny days will make the dark days of last winter seem like a world away.

However, let us not forget the man at the heart of this. Standing sentinel by any grill is the man who guards his barbecue like an emperor, a man who thinks of himself as being a master chef even though he might have just set fire to the big curly Cumberland ring.

Of course, lots of people have been working on their cooking skills during the pandemic, but without being able to get lots of people round for tea it is only as things open up again that anyone will find out if the practice has made perfect.
