Now that the restrictions have been lifted and big weddings return, so does the dilemma of how much to spend on a gift to mark the happy occasion.
The Metro reports that according to Ocean Finance, the average cost of being a wedding guest is £541.90, which can include a new outfit, a hotel or Airbnb, drinks, and a gift. It can be difficult to know just how much to spend on a wedding gift, but according to Ocean Finance’s experts, it all depends on how close you are to the bride and groom.
For immediate family, it is common to spend hundreds of pounds and to help with the cost of the big day, but for guests, it can be a dilemma and can be tricky for those on a tight budget.
Sarah Neate, Editor in Chief at Ocean Finance said that many couples are simply glad you were able to join them in their celebrations and will know that you will have spent money doing just that.
“However, you don't need to spend a fortune to show how much you care, and opting for a personalised or handmade gift can be a thoughtful and affordable way of celebrating the newlyweds,” she added.
So how much should you spend on a wedding gift? According to Ocean Finance, here’s a quick breakdown of what to spend:
Acquaintances and night guest: £20-30
If you’re just attending the evening event, then most couples will not expect you to bring gifts. But if you want to bring a gift as a gesture, then something around £20 to £30 is ideal.
An all-day guest: £50-100
It has been said that a gist should reflect the cost of the wedding meal, but it really depends on how much you’re comfortable spending. A personalised gift could be perfect!
An immediate family member, or bridal party: £50-100
For the bridal party and groomsmen, or a close family member, £50 - 100 is a typical amount to spend on a wedding gift, but don’t spend more than what you’re comfortable with, as you may already have coughed up for stag and hen dos!
