With the group stages of the Euros out of the way, fans of the remaining 16 sides still in the competition will be getting giddy with excitement as they contemplate their possible paths to the final.
Here in the UK, fans of both England and Wales have much to hope for, although the Scots have once again failed to make it past the group stages.
Of course, every stage is now do or die, with Wales facing a tough trip to Copenhagen to play a Denmark team riding a wave of emotion after the life-threatening cardiac arrest involving Christian Eriksen.
England won’t play until Tuesday (June 29th), but when they do, it will be a familiar foe walking out at Wembley as Germany come to town, albeit after stumbling through the group stages in unconvincing fashion with a draw against lowly Hungary.
All this means there may be some folk looking for personalised football mugs soon. Just as Bobby Charlton, Geoff Hurst and Gordon Banks were the images everyone wanted to be associated with after the 1966 World Cup triumph, it may be one of the faces of 2020 wrapped around someone’s morning coffee if England can bring it home, like Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling or Gareth Southgate.
Welsh fans may yet hope for the same, with the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey among possible candidates, although some might opt for a mug bearing the graphic images of Robbie Savage bursting into flames with excitement if the Henri Delaunay Trophy were to end up west of Offa’s Dyke.
Alternatively, Wales may go tumbling out as Denmark surge towards a repeat of their unlikely 1992 triumph, England might exit on penalties against the Germans again and attention will soon switch back to the transfer market and the start of the new season in August.
If so, don’t despair. You can still treat the football fan in your life with a mug bearing the face of their team’s latest signing.
